Twenty-five years ago, I learned about a product that began to change the course of my health and my life. Shortly thereafter, I also started learning about the company behind that product. At that time, I was a fledgling independent business owner—after spending the first 20+ years of my career as a nurse. I had worked in hospitals, community-based settings, a professional organization and academe; none of which offered me useful guidance as an entrepreneur.
Over the years, I can definitively proclaim that I have learned more about what it means to be an ethically and socially responsible business person from Jay Martin (Founder of the Juice Plus Company) than any other individual. While I have benefitted directly and indirectly from a lot of individuals, Jay continually inspires me to imagine a bigger vision along with an ever-growing servant’s heart—along with taking myself a little less seriously than is my usual wont.
Jay never ceases to amaze me. I just learned about his latest innovative, non-profit leadership initiative: My City Rides. You can read about it in the article below, linked from Inside Memphis Business.

The quarrel is not between ourselves, it is within us. The quarrel is between one’s own desires and that which is demanded. The quarrel is between the body and its longings, the soul and its terrors, and the mind, yearning to be free. The quarrel defines us. It drives us forwards, upwards, to our knees in prayer. You must embrace the quarrel. The quarrel will lead us to the answer. It is everything we are.*
