What does wellness mean to you?
Often, we think in broad lifestyle terms such as:
-
diet
-
exercise
-
sleep
-
stress management
Within this framework, we judge our current “performance” within each category – e.g., whether we’re eating the right or wrong things, whether we’re getting “enough” exercise and/or sleep and how well we “manage” our stress.
Wellness then becomes like a close-ended question/answer test – with only yes/no answers. Either you do or you don’t. Either you are or aren’t. Not much room for doubt. But also not much room for “grace” or growth. Certainly not much room for being with what IS at the moment.
What if we were to consider wellness more as an open-ended process-oriented approach. That is, one in which we explore our role as human beings as “energy transformers” — interconnected with the whole universe. And, one in which the condition of our life processes, including illness and wellness, depends on how we each manage the inward/outward flow of energy.
Wellness Energy System
Everything is energy–including the computer screen in front of you and the thoughts you are now thinking as you read this. Your body/mind/spirit is a sophisticated energy transformation system.
You take in energy from all the sources around you – from such tangible inputs as air, food, heat, light, sound, and physical touch, and from less tangible emotional and spiritual inputs as attention, care, love, enthusiasm, and extrasensory data.
You organize and transform that energy–some for internal housekeeping (such as digestion, circulation and neural activity), some for tissue repair, and some to generate emotions and thinking processes, including spiritual insights and transcendent states of consciousness.
You return some energy to the environment around you–for instance, as heat or carbon dioxide. You also return energy through communication and physical work, and through your expression of emotions and creativity.
Illness and Energy
When the flow of energy in your system is balanced and smooth, you feel good. When there is interference in the flow, illness is often the result. Interference can occur at any point. It could be due to:
- low quality or insufficient input energy–such as polluted air or a poorly balanced diet
- an insufficient or weak transformer–such as a damaged heart or an overweight body
- blockages to output energy–such as the inability to express emotions or a lack of someone with whom to communicate
The challenge of being well, then, consists of maximizing the efficiency of all 12 dimensions of your own energy transformation system.
To learn more about all 12 dimensions of the Wellness Energy System, you can enroll in the “Dimensions of Wellness” E-course. Each day, for 12 days, I’ll provide you with a brief description and overview for each of the 12 Dimensions of Wellness.
There’s no charge for this course–it’s my gift to you.
